AN OLD FRIEND FOR DINNER
SATURDAY 16. 4. / 17:00 / Slovenian Cinematheque
Lecture by Prof. Dr. Karmen Šterk and Dr. Eva Vrtačič, authors of Serial Culture, Popular Killer (Serijska kultura, popularni morilec).
Serial killers present one of the most horrifying notions one can encounter in everyday life and one of the most celebrated characters of late 20th century popular culture. They loom large in literature (Bret Easton Ellis, Patrick Süskind, Georges Bataille) and song (The Police, The Smiths), their portrayals have brought Academy Awards to the likes of Anthony Hopkins and Charlize Theron. Why are serial killers at once horrifying and fascinating, and why are these two notions not mutually exclusive? These are some of the questions Dr. Šterk and Dr. Vrtačič will tackle in their lecture, taking into account various theoretical approaches to the serial killer phenomenon, its origin, genesis and psychopathology, which, although it seems foreign and incomprehensible, is in fact all around us – not only on film.
Lecture in Slovene language. Free admission. Free tickets will be available at the Cinematheque box office on the day of the event (the box office opens at 16:00).
